Program

Day 1 - Sat, Oct 15

Arrival Pisa international airport Galileo Galilei and transfer to villa in Viareggio, a beach resort on the Italian riviera. Check in and settle into rooms. Visit the town boasting a two-mile long promenade lined with boutiques, elegant Art-Nouveau buildings, and several outstanding gelaterie. If it's warm enough you can even go for a swim in the sea. Welcome dinner.

Day 2 - Sun, Oct 16

After breakfast visit the beautiful town of Lucca, fully encompassed by great, centuries-old fortress walls which today have become a lovely, tree-lined promenade. See some of the city’s many wonderful buildings that bear witness to a splendid past, from ancient Roman colony to Napoleon’s court. A bike ride along the walls, for those who wish, gives you great views of the town from above and of the surrounding mountains. In the afternoon have a fun, hands-on cooking lesson back at the villa and dine on the full-course meal you’ll have created.

Day 3 - Mon, Oct 17

After breakfast foray in the Alpe Apuane. Have lunch in a local trattoria. Visit the surprisingly unknown town of Sarzana that possesses a remarkable old town brimming with lots of great architecture. Enjoy a wine tasting at the Cantine Lunae winery. Dinner at villa.

Day 4 - Tues, Oct 18

After breakfast foray in another area of the Alpe Apuane. Enjoy a picnic lunch as we discuss the morning's finds. Stop at Lerici known as the gulf of poets on the way back to Viareggio and discover why this spot attracted so many English poets: Byron, Shelley, Virginia Woolf and D.H. Lawrence to name some of the most famous. Dinner at villa.

Day 5 - Wed, Oct 19

After breakfast set off for La Spezia from where we'll catch a train to visit the Cinqueterre (five fishing villages perched dramatically on cliffs over the sea). We'll be train hopping to visit them all. Riomaggiore, Manarola, Corniglia (the only one that's not directly by the sea), Vernazza (arguably the prettiest of all five) and Monterosso. Catch a boat from Monterosso and see all the five towns from the sea. Catch a train back to La Spezia from where we'll head back to Viareggio. Dinner at villa.

Day 6 - Thurs, Oct 20

After breakfast go truffle hunting in the surrounding hills of the pretty, medieval town San Miniato, found halfway between Florence and Pisa. This small town is world famous for its annual white truffle festival and is also where the world's largest white truffle was found and gifted to President Eisenhower in 1954—the town's main claim to fame. Purchase some of these precious tubers for a second hands on cooking class back at the villa.

Day 7 - Fri, Oct 21

After breakfast foray in the mountains around Camaiore. Have lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon stop at lovely Pietrasanta, home to artists from around the world. Have drinks at one of the many outdoor cafés in the town’s great central square. Dinner at villa.

Day 8 - Sat, Oct 22

After breakfast foray in the mountains close to Lucca. Enjoy a picnic lunch as we discuss the morning's finds.Visit the late-Baroque gardens of Villa Marlia, designed for Napoleon’s sister. Be transported back into an unreal time when all efforts were made to create gardens of sensual delight. Dinner at villa.

Day 9 - Sun, Oct 23

After breakfast go on final foray in the mountains close to Lucca. Have farewell lunch in a local trattoria. In the afternoon set off along the area’s wine route crossing through the soft, rolling hills surrounding Lucca in an area which is also renowned for its outstanding olive oil. Visit the vineyards of one of the best wineries in the area. Dinner at villa.
