Spring in Tuscan Riviera

Apr. 5 - 15, 2025

Program

April 5, Sat - Day 1

Arrival at Pisa Airport Galileo Galilei and transfer to Casa Piero in Viareggio. The venue in Viareggio is a newly renovated, early twentieth-century town house with five en suites that's just a five-minute walk from the beach and right around the corner from the market and the city's best cafés and restaurants. Viareggio is a seaside resort in northern Tuscany boasting a two-mile-long esplanade lined with decorative Art Nouveau and Art Deco buildings, historic cafés and fancy boutiques. When all the guests have arrived, go on a walking tour and enjoy a gelato at one of the many excellent gelaterie in town. Welcome aperitifs and dinner at Casa Piero.

April 6, Sun - Day 2

After breakfast take part in a fun, hands on cooking class preparing a full-course, traditional Viareggio meal to have for lunch. After lunch and a short respite visit Pietrasanta, a charming little town that attracts artists from around the world. Beautiful palazzi, churches and lively cafés overlook the vast, open central square that is frequently the site of whimsical sculpture exhibits. Dinner in one of the many excellent restaurants scattered through town.

April 7, Mon – Day 3

After breakfast free time to explore Viareggio, walk the esplanade to admire the architecture, people watch at one of the many outdoor cafés, and/or go window shopping. If it’s a warm sunny day you can go for a swim in the sea. Walk down the pier for a great view of the sea and majestic mountain stretch rising in the background. Rent bikes and ride through Viareggio’s shady parks or on one of the town’s many bike trails. These are just some of the many activities you can enjoy in this seaside resort. Lunch oyo. In the afternoon visit the beautiful, late Baroque gardens of Villa Reale in Marlia with a stately, French-inspired rectangular pool, a Pan grotto, a nymphaeum, an English-style park and a most original, trimmed boxwood theater with terracotta statues depicting performers. Return to Casa Piero for dinner.

April 8, Tues - Day 4

After breakfast drive to La Spezia to catch a ferry to visit what is arguably the prettiest of all the coastal towns in Liguria. A colorful huddle of old fishermen's homes greet those who visit the picturesque, seaside town of Portovenere. Leisurely strolls through winding, narrow streets will disclose spectacular seascapes of emerald waters lapping along the town's rocky shoreline (approximately a one-mile, partly uphill walk). Lunch oyo. Enjoy a wine tasting en route back to Viareggio. Dinner in Casa Piero.

April 9, Wed - Day 5

After breakfast we are off to Pisa to see what is perhaps one of Italy’s most famous symbols: The Leaning Tower. Admire the other stunning buildings that make up this majestic piazza. Be surprised to discover how many other noteworthy sights there are to see in this charming and lively university town (approximately a one to two mile walk) Lunch oyo. Dinner at Casa Piero.

April 10, Thurs - Day 6

After breakfast visit Florence, cradle of the Renaissance and a city that needs no introductions. Go on a walk to see some of the extraordinary art and architecture the city is packed with (approximately a three-mile walk). Lunch oyo. On returning to Viareggio have dinner in Casa Piero.

April 11, Fri - Day 7

After breakfast, visit the Cinqueterre, a UNESCO World Heritage site, five ingeniously constructed fishing villages set amid a dramatic coastal scenery. Free time to get a bite to eat. Take a ferry down the coast to admire the scenery from out at sea, hopping on and off to visit the towns. Dinner in the Villa.

April 12, Sat - Day 8

After breakfast visit the endearing city of Lucca, hidden behind imposing Renaissance walls. Its cobbled streets, handsome piazzas and shady promenades make it a perfect destination and with a ratio of 1 shop per every 3 inhabitants it's a great place for shopping. Lunch oyo. Return to Viareggio for dinner.

April 13, Sun - Day 9

After breakfast head for the northernmost part of Tuscany, a lush and mountainous area known as Lunigiana. Visit the picturesque and ancient town of Pontremoli wedged between two streams. Atop the town lies a fortress where mysterious, prehistoric statues known as 'Stele' are housed. Have lunch in nearby Bagnone set in an idyllic location. Return to Viareggio for dinner.

April 14, Mon - Day 10

After breakfast have a free morning to do some last minute shopping, go for a dip in the sea, pack, catch a local museum, or simply go for a stroll in the huge wooded central park. Have lunch oyo. In the afternoon enjoy another cooking class preparing your farewell dinner.
