SEPT 24TH - OCT. 3TH 2021
SOLELY MYCOLOGICAL PORTION
Program
Dubrovnik (2 nights)
Monday, Sept 20
Arrival in Dubrovnik airport and transfer to hotel at an hour to be established once everyone’s flight schedules are in. We recommend you book a flight that lands in the early afternoon (2pm – 4pm) as there will only be one transfer to hotel. If you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if you arrive too early (or having to reach the hotel by your own means if you arrive too late). Check into rooms and freshen up. In the late afternoon Claudio and Marco will lead an evening stroll through the town. 7 pm dinner back at hotel's restaurant.
Tuesday, Sept 21
After breakfast take a scenic boat ride to the old town of Dubrovnik where we'll be staying the full day. Dubrovnik's main attraction are its walls which you can walk at your own leisure. It can take up to three hours to walk the entire perimeter, depending on how fast you go, if you take your time and linger, or stop to have drinks or an ice cream. If you do decide to go for a walk on the walls, remember to bring sun protection and to wear a hat. Alternatively you can just walk through the old town itself to admire the city’s beautiful architecture. We will decide on a time and place to meet again in the afternoon to return to our hotel. Dinner at hotel.
Split (2 nights)
Wednesday, Sept 22
After breakfast transfer to Hotel in Split. After a little more than an hour take a break from the long drive ahead at the Rizman winery rest stop and enjoy a late morning aperitif sipping on a glass of wine as you stare out at the gorgeous panorama. Continue our journey north, passing the Bosnian border and many beautiful coastal views. We will stop at Marakaska around lunchtime to get a bite to eat. Makarska is a beach resort backed by a glorious mountain range and a lovely long waterfront promenade. Arrive at Hotel in Split some time in the early afternoon. Check into rooms. Claudio and Marco will lead a walk to see the main sites of Croatia's second largest city. Which boasts some of the best Roman ruins outside of Italy. Diocletian's Palace is one of the most imposing vestiges of Ancient Rome in existance. Originally built as a fortified town and imperial residence it has become a maze of streets buzzing with people and full of bars and restaurants. Dinner in restaurant in the old city center.
Thursday, Sept 23
After breakfast and having spent the morning visiting the local market we'll be off to pretty Trogir set within medieval walls on a tiny island and linked to the mainland by a bridge. The old town has earned UNESCO World Heritage status thanks to its many beautiful buildings dating from the 13th to the 15th centuries. Stroll down Trogir's wide seaside promenade lined with cafes and yachts. Have lunch in town before heading for Krka National Park, a magical place of waterfalls and gorges, with the river gushing through a karstic canyon 200m deep. Return to Split before dinner time.
Fuzine (4 nights)
Friday, Sept 24 (beginning of myco tour)
For those on the 4-day extension: after breakfast transfer to new hotel in Fuzine. En route visit Sibenik whose magnicent medieval town center is made of white stone that contrasts against the blue waters of the bay. Sibenik's cathedral is also considered one of the most important architectural masterpieces of the Dalmatian coast. Continue journey north stopping in a country tavern for lunch. For those coming on the solely myco tour we will meet at Arrivals in Zagreb airport at 2 pm and transfer to hotel in Fuzine. Check into rooms and freshen up and meet those who took part in the 4-day extension. Fuzine is a pleasant mountain village located in the stunning region of Gorski Kotar, also known as the Croatian Switzerland and as a mushroom mecca. Check into rooms and go on an orientation walk around the town. Welcome dinner.
Saturday, Sept 25
After breakfast meet local mycologists and go on a mushroom foray in forests near Fuzine. Have lunch in a local 'gostiona'. In the afternoon admire the stalagtites and stalagmites of the Lokvarka Cave, one of the biggest and most beautiful karst caves in Croatia. Return to hotel in the late afternoon.
Sunday, Sept 26
After breakfast go on 2nd mushroom foray on the island of Krk, Croatia's biggest and most popular island with a very varied landscape. Though only an hour away from Fuzine the vegetation here is very different, so expect to find different species of mushrooms from the day before. We'll take advantage of being near the sea to have a fish and seafood lunch. Return to Fuzine in the late afternoon/early evening.
Monday, Sept 27
After breakfast go on foray in other forests found in Gorski Kotar which should be full of mushrooms during this time of year. Have lunch in a local 'gostiona'. Return to hotel in the late afternoon.
Osijek (3 nights)
Tuesday, Sept 28
After breakfast transfer to Osijek making a few pit stops along the way. Our first stop will be in the town of Karlovac to visit the unique fresh water fish aquarium, Aquatika. Afterwards we will continue our journey eastbound and stop for lunch in a country tavern followed by a foray in the Moslavačka gora mountain, a popular destination for mushroom hunters. Arrive at new hotel in Osijek in the late afternoon/early evening. Handsome Osijek is the fourth largest city of Croatia; it has several fine buildings you can admire and a lovely main square.
Wednesday, Sept 29
After breakfast spend the day looking for mushrooms in the Baranja region and visiting the beautiful wetlands area of the Nature Park Kopački rit a Ramsar site and bird haven. Have lunch in a local gostiona. Return to Osijek.
Thursday, Sept 30
After breakfast go on foray in the forests near Lake Borovik. Have lunch in a local tavern. On our way back to hotel visit Đakovo with an impressive neo-Romanesque cathedral completely decorated with colorful frescos. Check out the town's Lipizzaner horse heritage at the State Stud Farm where these sought-after purebreds are trained.
Zagreb (2 nights)
Friday, Oct 1
After breakfast transfer to Zagreb. Foray in the Papuk Nature Park, a UNESCO world heritage site and one of the most beautiful mountain valleys in Europe, surrounded by centuries-old beech forest. Have lunch in Kutjevo and enjoy a wine tasting in one of the many wineries along the way to try the prize-winning Graševina wine. Arrive at hotel in the late afternoon/early evening. Check into rooms and go on an orientation walk.
Saturday, Oct 2
After breakfast visit Croatia's vibrant capital. Stroll through the lovely red-roofed, cobblestoned upper town peppered with church spires, domes and fancy buildings and discover the lower town's neo-Baroque and Art Deco buildings. Enjoy farewell lunch in one of the city's excellent restaurants. In the afternoon we recommend a visit to Zagreb's very cool museum of broken relationships as well as a mushroom museum, Muzej gljiva, that has an extraordinary collection of real, freeze-dried mushrooms. Make sure to say farewell to all your traveling companions on this evening as you may not have the chance to do so the following morning.
Sunday, Oct 3
Departure from Zagreb airport. We recommend you book a flight that departs around noon (11am – 1pm). We will only offer a limited amount of transfers to airport therefore if you remain within our suggested time slot you can avoid having to wait at the airport for a long time if your flight departs very late or having to reach hotel by your own means if your flight departs very early.
In the next few weeks more specific information will be added regarding the afternoon activities and the mycological outings
